AICRAFT, an onboard computing systems maker, has landed a breakthrough agreement with European imaging company Scanway Space.

With this contract, the Munich-based startup takes on its most adventurous project to date, which spans far beyond typical computer applications. The South Australian company will provide an edge computing module designed to be integrated directly into an optical payload that can detect methane plumes in orbit. This represents a significant technological step forward for space-based environmental monitoring.

Edge computing accomplishes just that, reversing the traditional paradigm: instead of transmitting data to and from centralised resources miles away (in outer space, thousands of miles), computational power is brought closer to where data is collected.

The large volumes of data generated by satellites make traditional cloud computing models impractical due to latency and constrained economics. This innovation allows the AI-driven analysis of visible, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared data to detect methane with high precision in real-time directly on the satellite itself—thus overcoming limitations imposed by far-away cloud infrastructures.

Strategic implications for space technology

The choice to integrate edge computing into satellite systems should not be taken lightly. AICRAFT and Scanway Space are each navigating multifaceted market dynamics, reconciling non-recurring engineering costs, and selectively targeting identified users—most notably government bodies focused on climate action. The firms are refining their go-to-market strategy and deciding whether to partner with hyperscalers, application developers, or satellite integration initiatives in order to optimise technology adoption and market access.

Security improvement is one of the key selling points for edge computing in space. For government customers, in particular, this capability can be used to process and sync data in real-time within the satellite itself before sending that information back to Earth at a secure time and when it makes the most technical sense. The feature aligns well with the increasing demands of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, which are becoming ever more attractive to national security and civil agencies looking for forward-leaning capabilities to support their sustainable and resilient space technologies.

There is more to using edge computing in space than just faster processing of satellite data; it also powers entirely new pathways for innovation that can be followed across industries. Agriculture and transportation companies, among others, are starting to see the benefits of satellite-enabled services. Asset management, for example, now sees a slew of new functionalities that were previously unsuitable for existing solutions due to prohibitive latency.
